Artist Statement / Elaboration In 2005, this painting explores the threshold — the liminal space between earth and the divine. At the center, a pinecone hovers, suspended between the 1st Heaven: the sky and the 2nd Heaven: the vast cosmic space beyond. The pinecone is not random. In many traditions it’s a symbol of enlightenment, eternal life, spiritual awakening, and the seed of creation. Here it becomes the axis between two realms. The 1st Heaven below is rendered as atmosphere: soft gradients of blue, drifting clouds, light that feels breathable and close to us. It’s the sky we know — weather, birds, day and night. The 2nd Heaven above shifts into deep indigo and black, scattered with stars, nebulae, and distant galaxies. This is the space of mystery, of the infinite. Not heaven as a place of clouds and angels, but as cosmos — vast, silent, sacred. Between them, the pinecone floats weightless. It’s both grounded and celestial. Its scales catch light from both sides: warm sunlight from below, cool starlight from above. It doesn’t belong fully to either realm, and that tension is the point. The painting asks: What if transcendence isn’t about leaving earth, but about hovering between? About being a seed that holds the potential of both worlds.
